Tinnitus is a phantom auditory perception. It may be perceived as ringing, roaring, hissing or buzzing. Typically, only the patient can hear their tinnitus (subjective tinnitus) sound but sometimes others can hear the tinnitus sound (objective tinnitus). Thirty million Americans suffer with tinnitus. Tinnitus is a symptom of an ear disorder, just like hearing loss is a symptom of an ear disorder. We only treat tinnitus that bothers patients, that is perceived as annoying by the patient.
